This is a nice site, tucked away in its own bay with a very special guest star in the nearby set of waterfalls that my daughter named Vader Falls a long time ago.

The site sits on a small point. It’s a rocky spot, with somewhat uneven terrain. There is a small climb up from the canoe landing area, but once you’re up there it’s easy enough to navigate. The fire pit is tucked towards the back of  the rocky area, and the best spots for tents are in the trees just behind. There’s room for at least a couple of tents, if not more.

The site is secluded. The nearest site is at the top of the bay and out of sight from here. You may end up with visitors anyway if people come by to check out the falls, but it should feel pretty private, especially at night. Private, but likely not quiet as you’ll have the sound of rushing (or trickling depending on the time of year) water keeping you company.

Vader Falls, which is the highlight of the site, is just across a small bay. There is a path that leads from the site around the bay, and it’s worth the walk around for the change in vantage point. You can also, if you’re feeling adventurous, climb the falls and walk over to nearby Kenneth Lake.

Are there better sites nearby?  This is the only site I’ve been to on Head Lake. I’m not sure why you’d go to any other.

I wrote a book! Don’t Forget the TP: Lessons Learned the Hard Way in Algonquin Park is out now. If you like my trip reports I promise you are going to love this book. It’s a collection of the mistakes I’ve made, and what I’ve learned from them, in Algonquin’s backcountry. Check it out now!
