I was a big fan of this site. We only stopped here for a quick break, but it definitely impressed me. It’s a large site, with plenty of useable space scattered between the pines. From the water, it looks a bit closed in thanks to the shoreline growth. The underwater approach requires a bit of a sharp eye as there are rocks scattered across the sandy bottom that can catch your canoe. The landing area isn’t all that big either, with a decent beach-y spot that’s wide enough for one canoe. Once you get on the site it really opens up. The terrain is mostly flat, then rises gently towards the back of the site. There are plenty of spots for tents, and a very nice fire pit set up in the middle of the site. There isn’t much in the way of bench seating here, so a camp chair is a help but not a must. The thunderbox is up behind the site a short hike and is in very good shape. The underwater terrain is a mix of sand and rock and looks like it would be decent for wading in. Views are somewhat obstructed by the shoreline growth, but not enough that you feel hemmed in.
Are there better sites nearby? I can’t answer this one well. I’ve only checked out one of the nearby sites and while I’d take this one over that one, I can’t guarantee there isn’t a hidden gem nearby. But this one is good!
