This is a really pleasant little site at the end of the short p370 Stewart’s Dam Rapids portage along the Nipissing. Unlike a lot of portage sites, this one doesn’t feel enclosed, although it is directly on the portage trail. The terrain is relatively level, and there is room for a couple of tents if need be (although it would be tight). It’s got a partially obstructed view of the water, but tree coverage along the shoreline isn’t too dense so it doesn’t feel tight. The fire pit is fairly central, and is not that far off the portage trail, but it does the job. There’s a small bench nearby, and that’s about it for accessories. The river is quite shallow here, so don’t plan on swimming. The wading, however, looked decent. If I was staying anywhere along this stretch of the Nip I would strongly consider this site.
Are there better spots nearby? In this case I’d say it depends on your definition of nearby. This was my favourite site between Highview Cabin and the Nadine portage. The Allen Raps and one of the High Falls sites aren’t bad, but they’re not as good as this one. That said, if you’re choosing between this and Highview, take Highview every time.
