Site Location

This is a pretty basic site about halfway along the p850 on the Nipissing River that is also home to Highview Cabin. I’m generally not all that enthusiastic about portage sites. They’re more stopping points than destinations as far as I’m concerned, and this one isn’t all that different. However, for a portage site, it’s pretty decent. It’s got a small footprint, but certainly enough space for a tent and a canoe. It’s right beside the portage, so you’ll have people walking through, but you’re probably not spending multiple days here so that wouldn’t be too much of an issue. It’s a flat site, with close access to the Nipissing for water filtering. Not for swimming though. The river is like six inches deep and filled with rocks here. There’s a reason this a portage and not a continuation of the paddling route.

The highlight of this site is probably the proximity to Highview Cabin. There’s an open meadow about 100 meters east of the site where you can see the old foundations of a 1920s-ish logging camp, and just past that is the cabin itself. (Please note, this cabin is rented separately, so if you don’t have a permit for it you can’t squat).
