Algonquin isn’t just about the paddling. In fact, my guess is that the majority of people who visit the Park don’t travel more than 1 or 2 lakes away from the main access points along highway 60. So it’s a good thing that there is so much to do along the highway 60 corridor beyond strapping a canoe to your back and hoping to outrun the bugs on your way to Big Trout. My focus in the Park is on paddling, but from time to time I try to check out some of the other attractions that are closer to home. Here you’ll find short reviews and recaps of some of the hikes I’ve done and attractions I’ve visited when I’m not out on the water.
A 1.3 KM loop on Highway 60 at the KM 54 marker (near the East Gate). Great for families. An easy and informative morning walk if you’re staying at a nearby campground. Click here for more!
A 5.8 KM loop on Highway 60 between KM 30 and 31. This is my favourite trail in the Park (so far). It’s gives you a little bit of everything from a terrain perspective and is a great running trail as well! Click here for more!
A 2 KM loop between KM 45 and 46 on the south side of Highway 60. This trail provides a bit of up and down and some nice views. Close to the Opeongo and Rock Lake Access Points. Click here for more!
A 3 KM loop trail between kilometers 40 and 41 on the north side of Highway 60. This trail is close to the Rock Lake access point/campground, and offers some interesting history along the route. Click here for more!
A 3.5 KM loop trail on the north side of Highway 60, just past KM 27. This is Bat Lake Trail’s shorter cousin. Similar terrain profile and a nice view at the midpoint. Click here for more!
A 2 KM loop between KM 39 and 40 on the north side of Highway 60. This is a short trail with quite a bit of climbing to get to the lookout. But it’s worth it! Close to Booth’s Rock Trail at Rock Lake and Big Pines as well. Click here for more!
A 2.3 KM loop near kilometer 19 on Highway 60’s north side. This is a slightly more technical trail than some of the other short hikes along Highway 60, but not so technical that you can’t bring the kids. Click here for more!
A 1.5 KM trail very close to the Algonquin Visitor’s Center at KM 43 on Highway 60. As the name suggests, this is a boardwalk stroll across a Spruce Bog. The scenery is quite nice and it’s accessible for pretty much everyone. Click here for more!
A 2.1 KM loop near KM 7 on the north side of Highway 60. This is a short trail just past the Park’s West Gate. It’s great for a day trip hike. The view of Whiskey Rapids is quite pretty! Click here for more!
