This is a mid sized site on a quiet lake near the end of a canoe route. It’s going to give you all the privacy and seclusion you could ask for, so long as there’s no one staying on Site 2, which is directly next door (and this can happen. There are two permits issued for Calumet). Of the two sites, this is by far my preferred choice. The shoreline approach is decent. There weren’t many underwater obstacles to navigate, and the canoe landing is unobstructed and gentle. It is a relatively flat spot with room for a couple of tents at least. The shoreline is partially enclosed, but not in a way that makes the site feel hemmed in or dark. If anything, it feels like you might get some protection from the onshore wind without completely sacrificing the view. The fire pit area is decent and, when we were there, someone had left a fantastic stack of cut wood. I’m not going to assume that’s always a feature of this site, but who knows, maybe there are some helpful wood gnomes living nearby?

Are there better sites nearby? No. This is the better spot on Calumet, and it’s not particularly close. Don’t believe me? Check out my review for Site 2 now!
