This is the best option on Mallic, and it’s not close. That doesn’t mean it’s a great site, but it’s definitely better than everything else Mallic has to offer.

To start with, this site is up a hill. If you’re not looking to get a serious leg workout in every time you need to go to the water, you might want to look somewhere else. I’m terrible at estimating angles, so let’s just say that it’s steep (and high, the site proper is about 20 feet above the shoreline).

Once you get up to the site, it’s actually a decent spot. It’s a wide, flat, plateau overlooking Mallic. There’s plenty of room for tents, and a good selection of freestanding pine to hang hammocks, drying lines and tarps (or, in our case, bug tents).

The fire pit area is … well, it’s fine. The pit is pretty minimal and the surrounding benches aren’t anything to write home about. There is a substantial plywood table (God knows how that slab of plywood got into Malic in the first place) that is great for cooking and organizing.

The swimming and canoe landing area are one and the same. There are no significant underwater obstacles when you’re approaching the shoreline, and the pull up is easy to navigate and load/unload from. Despite the decent shoreline and access, the swimming is meh at best. The underwater terrain is, to put it scientifically, icky, and the weed situation is not nonexistent.

Are there better sites nearby? No. All things considered, this is a decent, but not great option on Mallic. But, as I mentioned earlier, it’s the best option on Mallic. So there’s that.
