This is Round Island’s only island site. It’s a small spot, but comfortable. The site is located at a narrow spot on the island, which means you’ve got water on both sides of you nice views in either direction. It also means that on a windy day I would imagine the breeze just rips through this space, so may want to give it a miss if it’s early/late season and the weather isn’t cooperating.
The site proper is flat and easy to navigate. The terrain is a mix of pine needle and … I want to say grass but that’s probably not right. Grass-ish green stuff. One thing I noticed was that the ground felt soft. Like it’s got a decent layer of whatever the ground cover is.
The canoe landing is a decent little pull up spot on the east side of the island. Makes for a great spot to load and unload without any significant underwater obstacles on the approach. The fire pit area has a nice view east (and the cedar just behind the fire pit is a great spot to lean against and look west). This isn’t a huge site. There’s room for a couple of tents at best. for a small group though, this would work pretty well.
Are there better sites nearby? I’d prefer site 2 to this one, but this would be my second choice on Round Island
