Sec Lake – Site 14

Site Details

Closest Access Point:  Sec Lake (access # 20)
Distance to Access Point: A few hundred meters.
Difficulty of Travel From Access Point: Easy
Maintenance Level: Regular
Date Visited: November, 2022

Of the three west facing sites on Sec’s westernmost island, this was my favourite. It’s a bit separate from the other two sites, has lots of room and a neat layout. It’s also got a beach and a really nice view to the west. Can’t really ask for more.

Terrain: This is a flat site, set about ten feet above the water for the most part. There’s a couple of steps up from the water to the site proper, but after that it’s very level.  The ground is clear of obstructions for the most part.

Canoe Landing: There are a couple of canoe landing spots. The one pictured is on the west facing side of the island and is the better spot. It’s got a gradual beach leading up to it and room to load unload. You do have to get your gear up a short rise from here though.

Fire Pit: The fire pit is located in the middle of the site, where the point starts to narrow. This is an exposed pit. In a strong wind, it would get chilly. (Which it did).

Tent Sites:  As mentioned above, this is a nicely flat site. There’s room for at least two, maybe three tents without feeling cramped. The only caveat I’d have is that the western exposure could make for a chilly night in the shoulder seasons if the wind is up.

Swimmability: There’s a nice crescent beach facing west. For the most part, the beach is underwater, but it’s a good spot to wade in from.

Thunderbox: The thunderbox is down a short trail out the back of the site. It’s in good condition, but likely gets a ton of use (that said, we were there in November and it wasn’t too gross).

Accessories: Someone has built whatever this thing is between a couple of trees at the back of the site. Otherwise, amenities are scarce. No log benches.

Views: Really nice western view from pretty much the entire site. The tree cover between the site and the shoreline along the western shore is sparse at best. There’s nothing to obstruct your view, or the wind. There’s more coverage from the north and easy side of the site.

Notes: I liked this site a lot. I think it would be a good option for an early fall trip. It would get a decent amount of sun and is on the less busy side of the island.
