This is a grassy, south facing site in Hogan’s western bay. One of your first three options as you come out of Lake La Muir or up from Big Crow, this is a reasonable stopping point. I used to love Site 1, but when we stopped there on this trip the half of the island where the site sits seems to have burned down a couple years back. Site 3 is a decent alternative to that burned out husk. Which I guess isn’t saying much.
The site is set up on two levels. There is a wide beachy area where you can pull up the canoe for loading/unloading, and where you can swim as well. The site is fronted by grassy clearing, which offers a decent amount of level-ish terrain for setting up tents. The grass ends at the base of a small climb, and at the top of that hill you’ll find the site proper. The fire pit area is pretty basic, but gets the job done. There is a well built fire pit and a couple of decent log benches. The view from the fire pit area is good, if semi-obstructed.
The views from this site are quite nice. You can see both south and north, with a great sunset view to boot from the back of the site. One warning, this site was buuuuuuugggggggyyyy when we were there. I don’t know if that’s a function of the grass, or just bad luck, but the mosquitoes were out and swarming in a way that we didn’t see on any other site on this trip.
Are there better sites nearby? There are some decent sites nearby. I wouldn’t say that any of them are worlds better, but I might target something that isn’t quite so grassy depending on where we are in bug season.
(Speaking of bug season, here’s your reminder that if you use the code AABug15 at The Original Bug Shirt you’ll get 15% off of any of their bug protective gear).
