This is the weaker of Calumet’s two sites. If I had a choice between it and its neighbour I’d pick Site 1. If I didn’t have a choice … maybe I’d see if the folks on Site 1 want to share?
Okay, I’m being unfair. My main criticism of Site 2 is that it’s fairly enclosed and set back from the lake. The site is fronted by a small break in the shoreline. The canoe landing is in a grassy patch, and it looks decent enough. The underwater terrain was obstacle free from what I could see, but I’ll put in the caveat that I didn’t paddle up to this site. We walked over from nearby Site 1 which connects to this one by a short path.
The site proper is about thirty paces back of the lake at the end of a short trail. From the fire pit area there is very little in the way of a view out to the water (although the view from the canoe landing is quite nice). This would be a hard spot if you’re a fan of watching the water while you’re hanging out by the fire.
The fire pit is set in the middle of a clearing and has a couple of log benches that are well on their way to a better place. Other than that, it’s a flat site with plenty of tent room. If I’m reaching, this would be a good spot in the shoulder seasons. It’s enclosed, which means it’s protected. Actually, you know what? If I was staying on Calumet in the early spring, and I had the lake to myself, I might set up my tent on Site 2 to get the windbreak while using Site 1 for everything else. I don’t know if you’d necessarily want that walk at night, but it’s definitely something I’d consider.
Are there better sites nearby? Yes. Site 1 is better. It’s also super close. So if someone else also has a permit for Calumet be ready to make some friends.
