This is a small site without much going for it. It’s the middle of three sites on Mallic’s north shore, and it would be my last choice of the bunch. In the trip report that included my stop at this site I wrote “and the middle site is small, overgrown and has a general “Really? You stopped here?” vibe”, which kinds of sums it up perfectly. However, for those looking for more detail on why to give this one a miss …
To start with, this is a small, relatively enclosed feeling site. It’s built on the side of a hill and doesn’t offer a ton of usable, level ground. That said, there is room for a couple of tents if you don’t mind being close to the fire pit, and the benches beside that pit are actually pretty good! The pit itself? That’s more of the jumble of rocks variety than it is a well built pit.
The shoreline is fairly overgrown, although there is a break in the brush where you can pull your canoe up. The underwater terrain and approach are fine, mostly free of obstacles and easy to navigate. The view out to the water from the fire pit is partially obstructed, but not terrible (and the view of Mallic from the shoreline is actually kind of nice). I didn’t bother looking for the thunderbox, but I suspect it doesn’t see a ton of use, so may actually be decent!
Are there better sites nearby? Yes. Site 3 would be my go-to on Mallic.
